Garden Gnome/Gonks
Rose gonk

My friend Sue showed me some gnomes which had been made from slipcast marble (moulded). I was inspired to explore making some of my own. My first one had a wheel thrown body and a coil built hat, seeing that I can’t throw a cylinder higher than 8cm. This one has been outside a while, and unfortunately, due to my kiln under firing, he has suffered some frost damage due to not being vitrified. I’m still experimenting with gnomes/gonks, trying new shapes, but I’m not sure they can beat this one’s charm and character, so I might return to it.

I’m a retired, disabled teacher who has now refocused on clay as therapy, and my mission is to share the process to help others. Not everyone can afford expensive courses, tools and templates, so I’m hoping to provide as much as I can for free or for less than the price of a coffee. All my pieces can be made on a small table using a minimum of tools.
